Winter ( and your hair)

Its that time of year again. You're keeping that giant bottle of lotion in your Bag or your car and to prevent that cold winter air from drying out your skin your slathering it on in heaps, but what are you doing for your hair?

Often times people confuse dry hair with damaged hair and while dryness leads to damage its just not the same thing so even if you are using a product to keep the winter air from truamatizing your tresses is it the right one ?

Never fear we are hear to help !!

Step One

Decide if your hair is dry or damaged you may need a professional to help figure it out but if you can visibly see bends and splits in the hair then its damaged and you need to tackle that issue first

we recomend visiting the salon for a repairative treatment like Kera Triplex intensive treatment by Paul Mitchel and a good trim.

What not to do : dont use an at home protien treatment or any products that add keratin to the hair without first discussing it with an educated profesional. These products if over used can actually damage your hair more then helping it so just say no. If your stylist recommends a quality product be sure to use them for short periods of time then switch to something else. Consult the stylist for how long a period is right for your hair

If your hair is dry it will be staticy unruley appear damaged but without much splitting or bending if this is the case or youve solved the problem of damage and want to avoid the dryness move on to step two

Step Two

Get yourself a moisterizing shampoo

Having the right shampoo and is esential to keeping your hair its best so dont skimp! Using a proffessional product purchased at a reputable salon may seem expensive but your hair will be better off and you'll use less of the good stuff to do the same amount of work so its not that much more expensive. Marula Oil Rare oil replenishing shampoo retails at about 28 dollars for 7oz bottle but the amount of shampoo needed is about two peas (or one pump) so its really going to last.

Make sure you rinse your shampoo really well ... even sulfate free shampoo will dry out your hair if you leave it in so rinse rinse rinse and rinse some more and yes dont use hot water its bad for your hair its bad for your skin its bad for your color ( if your doing chemical services) and its bad for the earth so luke warm or go home !!

Step three

AND a good conditioner

towel dry your hair with a micro fiber towel or old cotton tshirt you dont wear any more THEN apply your conditioner leave it on for several minuets and then rinse with cold water . Its all very scientific but your hair will be amazing and your ... ok fine ill explain!

Hair is a sponge and if your hair is wet then the conditioner wont be able to get where it neess to go and in the end it wil just stick to the ourside and weight it down but if its dried then the conditoner can fill the damaged gaps and make your hair fuller.

Why the cold rinse? well theres a lot of reasons including that we enjoy the thougt of you shivering and cursing our name everytime you wash your hair but the truth is that this closes the cuticle helping the hair to be smoother and also rinse any excess conditioner off that may get stuck on the outside of an open hair cuticle ... the result is healther fuller hair

step four

get a hair oil.... and I dont mean olive or cocunut oil:

we know its organic and we know you love it but consider this ,,, Its not a hair product

do they work ? sure sometimes it works fantastic but it depends on the quaility of the oil you're using and why take the risk ?

A few drops of a good oil on dry hair is enough to protect your hair for a few hours at a time so I suggest a light wheight oil like Marula oil rare oil treatment applied ends to mid length just before heading out the door to the next big adventure. Many of the oils on the market that are designed for use on the hair also have a light weight formula so it doesnt weigh down the hair and thats a good thing . Professional procucts arent going to leave any unexpected build up or undesired scent that you didnt want so go get an oil that was specifically designend to treat and moisturize your hair and leave the olive oil for the healthy cooking and italian food

Step five

Cover Up

nothing will protect your hair better then a good old fashioned hat and coat if your hair gets oily or flat you can use a dry shampoo if your a curly girl try a bun or pony tail then let it fall when you get there or just sport the style !!
